How to Record Your Screen as a GIF
GifMeThis uses the browser's Screen Capture API to let you record anything on your display and convert it to an animated GIF. Here's the process:
- Click "Start Recording" — your browser opens a dialog asking what to share: the entire screen, a specific application window, or a browser tab.
- Select your source — pick the screen or window you want to capture and confirm.
- Recording starts — the tool captures frames at the configured FPS. A timer shows elapsed time.
- Click "Stop Recording" — or wait for the max duration. The recording stops and the frames are encoded into a GIF.
- Download — preview your screen recording GIF and download it.
Use Cases for Screen Recording GIFs
- Bug reports — show developers exactly what went wrong in a compact, shareable format.
- Tutorials and how-tos — demonstrate a feature or workflow step by step.
- Product demos — record a quick walkthrough of your app or website.
- Social media posts — create short screen capture clips for Twitter, Slack, or GitHub.
- Documentation — embed animated screenshots in wikis, README files, or help articles.
Tips for Smaller Files
- Keep recordings short — 3 to 10 seconds is ideal.
- Set the width to 640px or less to significantly reduce file size.
- Use 5–8 FPS for UI demos where fluid motion is less important.
- Reduce the quality setting if the GIF exceeds your target size.
Browser Compatibility
Screen recording uses the getDisplayMedia API, supported in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari 13+. On mobile devices, screen sharing may not be available.
